Welcome to the Second Trimester!!!
 
The junior high has been very busy during the First Trimester of the 2009/2010 school year.
 
Junior High Accomplishments:
  1. Have written a self-to-text paper based upon a reading of Shel Silverstein's "The Giving Tree".
  2. Created a drawing for our annual Knights of Columbus Council "Keeping Christ in Christmas" competition.
  3. Written a poem sent in for the chance of publication in the 2010 edition "Anthology of Poetry by Young Americans".
 
8th Grade Language Arts Accomplishments:
  1. Learned how to take proper notes (including examples)without copying directly from the textbook.
  2. Used the 5 steps of the Writing Process in various types of writing activities.
  3. Created many types of prewriting strategies to organize ideas (bubble graphs, word maps, outlining, compare/contrast diagrams).
  4. Reviewed the 3 cases of Nouns and can identify the steps in order to find the many jobs of nouns from a given sentence.
  5. Applied their knowledge of nouns to pronouns in order to catagorize and identify pronouns into their 3 cases and use them correctly when writing.
  6. Have read many short stories from our subscriptions to Scope and READ magazines - helping them to identify the different types and styles of writing - while being able to answer specific questions based upon these stories.
 
7th Grade Language Arts Accomplishments:
  1. Learned how to take proper notes (with labled examples) without just copying straight from the textbook.
  2. Differenciated between the ideas of topic sentences, beginning sentences, middle sentences, and ending sentences to create a cohesively written paragraph.
  3. Worked in cooperative groups to use the 5 steps of the writing process to create a short story based upon a picture from National Geographic Magazine.
  4. Mastered the catagorizing of nouns into 3 cases by the jobs which they perform within a sentence.
  5. Have read many short stories from our subscriptions to Scope and READ magazines - helping them to identify the different types and styles of writing - while being able to answer specific questions based upon these stories.
 

 


 
Room 305 Reading Accomplishments:
  1. Independently Read 6 Accelerated Reading books during the First Trimester.
  2. Identified various types of writing styles (Fact/Opinion,  Main Ideas & Supporting Details, Point of View, and Summarizing) using worksheets, short stories, notetaking, and review quizzes.
  3. Read many short stories from our Scope and READ magazine subscription in order to complete Character Analysis, Motive, Inference, Tone, Sequencing, Compare/Contrast, Vocabulary, Setting, Text Interpretation, and Written Responses using full sentences from Writing Prompts.
  4. Created a movie poster from an independently read short story from our Halloween book "Scarey Stories".
 
Room 305 Religion Accomplishments:
  1. Successfully completed the first 5 Chapters in our Faith First: Faith and Sacraments book.
  2. Completed many art/written activities during each chapter.
  3. Gave small group presentations based upon Bible readings of St. Paul's Journies. 
  4. Listened to a daily Saint of the Day story and written down 3 important facts about that Saint into their notebooks.
  5. Joined Sr. Virginia once a week for an in-depth Bible study of Acts of the Apostles.
  6. Planned and participated in two 7th grade Thursday masses.
  7. Practiced and read a Saint story over the PA System for morning prayers during the second half of October.
  8. Completed 10/10+ service hours towards their Confirmation requirements.
 
Room 305 Wordskills Accomplishments:
  1. Completed the first 6 Chapters in the Wordskills workbook.
  2. Continuously practice proper handwriting techniques using their 3x each for Target Words from each chapter.
  3. Applied spelling words to vocabulary meanings to complete various definition activities.
  4. Learned about synonyms, antonyms, root words, prefixes, and suffixes.
